Our History

The Highwayman Inn, is nestled amongst 12 homes in Exlade Street, near Checkendon in the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The building dates back to the 16th century and the Exlade Street Blacksmiths Forge previously stood in the car park amongst several barns.

During World War Two RAF Woodcote, which was responsible for storing and distributing a huge amount of equipment, had a large facility based near Exlade Street. With over 750 personnel based very close by the pub you can understand why it succeeded during this period.  Walkers can still see the remains of the three bases in the local woods.

Paul and Evelyne took over the pub in 2009 and with their fantastic staff have built a reputation based on creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in comfortable surroundings in which to enjoy award winning food. They are committed to using local suppliers and produce with above all an eye for quality.
